GIRO will now be charging PST on selected items

As of October 1st GIRO will be charging Provincial Sales Tax (PST) on selected items

At the AGM this year the question was raised by a member of the community as to whether or not GIRO should be charging PST on the sale of used goods. Operating as a Recycling Depot whose main objective is to offer services that increase landfill diversion rates we believed we were exempt from charging PST. We wrote to Doug Routley asking for an exemption and he forwarded the request to the BC Minister of Finance Carol James.

We were told this week that our request has been declined, though they were sympathetic to our position and stated that the new government will be reviewing PST policy in 2018.

So as of October 1st 2017 we will be required to charge PST on selected items in the Restore. There are certain items that are exempt from PST; used clothing, footwear, bicycles, office stationary and books.

We hope to have additional information regarding this once it is implemented. If you have any questions please come and speak to me.

We apologize for the additional expense this will bring, and thank you for your support in this matter.
